Intel unveils the most expensive unboxing in history: the world's first high-NA lithography machine has been installed with a total cost of 2.9 billion yuan!

On March 5th, Intel released a special unboxing video featuring the most expensive item ever: the world's first high-NA EUV lithography machine obtained from ASML, which has already begun installation at a factory near Hillsboro, Oregon, USA. The lithography machine, model Twinscan EXE:5000, is truly a massive piece of equipment. During transportation, it required 250 crates and weighed approximately 150 tons. It was transported by plane from the Netherlands to Portland, Oregon, and then delivered to the factory in batches by truck. Currently, only the core components are being installed, requiring over 250 engineers from ASML and Intel. The installation process is expected to take about six months, followed by additional time for debugging. This lithography machine is primarily for research purposes and will be used for testing on Intel's 18A node. Large-scale production will have to wait until the recently announced Intel 14A node, estimated around 2025-2026. The machine can achieve a resolution of 8nm, compared to the 13nm resolution of existing low-NA lithography machines, and the transistor density can be increased by almost three times. As for the price, ASML stated an approximate price of $380 million, but this is just the base price. Higher configurations naturally come at a higher cost, with Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger revealing a price nearing $400 million, which is close to 2.9 billion yuan. In comparison, low-NA EUV lithography machines cost around $183 million. Apart from Intel, Samsung, TSMC, and SK Hynix have also placed orders for high-NA EUV lithography machines, with dozens of units in the first batch order.
